Real Madrid will enter the 2025-26 La Liga season, ushering in a new era under club legend Xabi Alonso, and hopes to reclaim its glory after a forgettable campaign last time. Not only did Los Blancos fail to win any silverware in the past season, apart from the one-off UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup, they were beaten to all available domestic trophies by arch-rivals Barcelona and eliminated from the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League. The Catalan giants beat Real Madrid in the two domestic cup finals and also completed a league double, causing them to lose four El Clásicos in a single season for the first time in 42 years. That ended the second stint of Carlo Ancelotti at the club with a lot of lingering issues to address for the Spaniard now in charge.
Alonso’s men took part in the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup this summer, making a promising run to the semifinals but then getting demolished by PSG, so they will have less time and rest than rivals Barcelona to prepare for the new season, with even city rivals Atletico Madrid leading in that aspect having suffered a group stage elimination from the tournament. Despite a positive start to his campaign, the history-making manager in the Bundesliga saw the flaws in his side in the humiliating 4-0 loss to the European champions, so he will have the burden to deliver at least one important silverware in the new season especially after Barcelona looking to make a dynasty after turning into a force again under Hansi Flick. The new La Liga season for Real Madrid kicks off on 17th August 2025 at home against Osasuna, with their first away game against promoted side Real Oviedo a weekend later.
The first important game on the domestic calendar will be the Madrid derby against Atletico in the Metropolitano at the end of September. Alonso’s team should have no excuse if they fail to make a good start with a favourable fixture list leading up to the clash in the Spanish capital. They need it badly, knowing that they will experience the first El Clásico of the season against league holders FC Barcelona just two games later. Los Blancos will also be engaged in an intense League Phase period of the Champions League, so they need to navigate this period properly. Barring any catastrophic downfall, Real Madrid will be in title contention come May 2026, but will be on their toes facing the Catalan giants at the reverse clash in Camp Nou and ending the campaign against a tricky Athletic Club side in the final month.
