Tottenham vs Brentford - Premier League 2026-27
Tottenham Hotspur endured a nightmare start to the 2026/27 Premier League season as Brentford absolutely outclassed Roberto De Zerbi’s side with a dominant 3-0 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium. Spurs were unable to contain Brentford’s relentless pressure, intensity and work-rate, with the hosts repeatedly attacking and making life difficult for the Tottenham defence, particularly goalkeeper Antonín Kinský. Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Vitaly Janelt doubled Brentford’s advantage in the 33rd. Michael Kayode then added a third just four minutes into the second half.

Brentford Dominate From Start to Finish

The Bees established control early and never allowed Tottenham to settle into the contest. Their aggressive pressing and constant movement repeatedly exposed gaps in Spurs’ defensive structure, while Tottenham struggled to create any sustained attacking threat.

Lewis-Potter’s opener set the tone before Janelt pounced to make it 2-0 before half-time. Kayode’s goal shortly after the restart effectively ended the contest, as Brentford continued to dictate the tempo and create opportunities.

Things could have gone from bad to worse for Tottenham had Igor Thiago converted a later penalty opportunity. The Brazilian striker struck the woodwork, meaning Spurs avoided an even heavier defeat. Had Thiago scored, Tottenham would have suffered their outright worst-ever Premier League opening-day defeat.

Tottenham Equal Worst Opening-Day Record

The 3-0 defeat means De Zerbi’s Tottenham have now equalled the club’s heaviest-ever Premier League opening-day loss.

Before Saturday, Tottenham’s record was a 3-0 defeat against Manchester United on August 22, 2011. Fifteen years later, Brentford have matched that scoreline and handed Spurs another deeply disappointing start to a Premier League campaign.

The result is particularly concerning for De Zerbi, who will now face early questions about his team’s defensive organisation and overall cohesion.

Historic Win for Brentford Against Tottenham

For Brentford, the victory was significant beyond the three points. The Bees have now won a Premier League home game against Tottenham for the first time in the competition. Their performance was a statement of intent, combining energy, organisation and attacking aggression to overwhelm their London rivals.

Brentford will now be hoping to continue their winning run when they face Leeds next week. Tottenham, meanwhile, have plenty to address before their next fixture, with De Zerbi a man under pressure already. The Spurs boss will be looking for an immediate response and, most importantly, a victory against Newcastle next week.
