The Champions League game between Sporting Lisbon and PSG ended in a shocking win for the Portuguese side, and it was their striker Luis Suarez who grabbed the headlines. The 28 year old forward scored a memorable brace to help Sporting earn an iconic 2-1 win over Luis Enrique's side.

So who is Luis Suarez and what is his football story? Let us find out

Player analysis - Sporting Lisbon's Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez is known for his explosive pace and direct attacking approach. Primarily a centre-forward, he can also drift wide - especially to the left where he likes to cut inside onto his stronger right foot, while still being capable of scoring with his left. His game is built on quick acceleration, physical strength, and smart movement in the box. He thrives in counterattacks, adds intensity with pressing, and contributes with both goals and assists. Thus, he stands out as a unique and strong forward for Sporting Lisbon.

Luis Suarez - the football career of Sporting's hero against Luis Enrique's PSG

Born in Santa Marta, Suarez began his senior career with Leones FC, making his debut in October 2015. After gaining early first-team experience, he moved to Spain in 2016 on loan to Granada CF, where he played mainly for the reserves. His development continued through a series of loans, including spells with Real Valladolid B and Gimnàstic de Tarragona, where his goal output steadily improved.

Suarez made his professional breakthrough in the Spanish Segunda División during the 2018–19 season and truly caught attention while on loan at Real Zaragoza. He finished that campaign with 19 league goals, emerging as the club’s top scorer and one of the division’s most dangerous forwards.

In 2020, he returned to Granada CF on a permanent deal, marking his rise to La Liga. Two years later, he moved to France after signing for Olympique de Marseille, gaining experience in Ligue 1 and European competition.

Suarez returned to Spain in late 2022 on loan with UD Almería, a move that proved highly successful. After helping the club avoid relegation, the deal became permanent. He delivered one of the best seasons of his career in 2024–25, finishing as the Segunda División’s top scorer with an impressive 27 goals, including a memorable hat-trick against his former club Granada.

In July 2025, Suarez took another major step by signing for Sporting CP. He made an instant impact, scoring soon after his arrival and later netting his first UEFA Champions League goal, against Napoli. Now with his brace against PSG, Luis is slowly establishing himself as a striker to watch out for in this year's Champions League.

What the future holds for Luis Suarez?

The goalscoring stats of Luis Suarez this season has been phenomenal, with the Colombian forward scoring 15 goals in 18 league games and another 4 in just 6 Champions League appearances. If he continues at this rate towards the end of this season, Sporting Lisbon might have a hard time holding on to their latest sensation as Europe's top clubs will be looking at him.
