India beat arch-rivals and most successful World Cup team Pakistan to seal the second spot in Pool D, while England finished on top after a thrashing win against Wales. On the other hand, the hosts Belgium and the defending champions Germany have advanced to the second round with their effective results in their respective games.
Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2026: First Round – Day 5 Results
(Pool D)
England 8–2 Wales
England strongly finished Pool D with a thrashing 8-2 win against Wales. England took an 8-0 lead, thanks to the goals by Sam Ward (2’), William Calnan (13’ & 20’), Thomas Sorsby (22’), Zachary Wallace (41’), Samuel Hooper (48’), Henry Croft (51’), and Nicholas Bandurak (54’). Gareth Furlong (58’ & 59’) scored two consolation goals for Wales just before the final whistle.
England won all three of their first-round games, beating Pakistan 4-1 and India 4-2. Meanwhile, before a 3-3 draw against Pakistan, Wales started the tournament with a 3-1 defeat against India.
Pakistan 3–5 India
Despite Pakistan’s late fightback, India claimed another important win to qualify for the second round with strong six points. Men in Blue took a 3-0 lead, with captain Harmanpreet Singh (5’ & 21’) scoring twice from penalty corners and Abhishek Nain (11’) scoring a field goal. Shahid Hannan scored Pakistan’s first goal of the match in the 22nd minute, before Abhishek scored his second goal and Sufyan Khan added one for Pakistan, as both goals were recorded in the 24th minute. In the 35th minute, Hardik Singh converted a penalty stroke, while Shahid scored Pakistan’s third goal in the 46th minute, but it wasn’t enough for them.
While India started the tournament with a 3-1 win against Wales, they lost against England by 4-2. On the other hand, the third-placed Pakistan first suffered a 4-1 defeat against England before managing a 3-3 draw against Wales.
(Pool B)
France 1–1 Germany
Defending champions Germany finished on top of Pool B with a 1-1 draw against France. Both goals were recorded through field goals, where Justus Weigand provided the lead for Germany in the 43rd minute, and Louis Haertelmeyer equalised for France in the final minute of the match.
Germany won their first two games of the tournament, as they beat Malaysia and the hosts Belgium by 5-1 and 1-0, respectively. On the other hand, France started the tournament with a 3-2 defeat against Belgium before recording a 3-3 draw against Malaysia.
Belgium 5–3 Malaysia
Hosts and last two-time finalists, Belgium, claimed the second spot in Pool B after claiming a 5-3 win against Malaysia. Tom Boon (17’) and Victor Foubert (20’) put Belgium 2-0 ahead before Aiman Rozemi (32’) reduced Malaysia's trail. Boon (36’) soon scored his second goal, but Muhammad Jalil (37’) quickly reduced the gap for Malaysia once again. After Thibeau Stockbroekx (43’) scored the hosts fourth goal, Boon completed his hat-trick in the 53rd minute, the same minute in which Mohamad Anuar scored the third goal for Malaysia.
Although Belgium lost their previous game against Germany by 1-0, they claimed a close 3-2 win against France in their tournament opener that helped them to seal second place in the points table. Meanwhile, Malaysia finished in the final place of Pool B, having previously suffered a 5-1 defeat against Germany and a 3-3 draw against France.
