On Sunday night (12th April), Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai experienced a great battle between the hosts Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the five-time IPL champions vs defending champions. With their strong first innings total, RCB claimed an important win by 18 runs.
After the Mumbai Indians sent RCB to bat first, the visitors scored 240/4 in 20 overs, with the help of three 50+ scores. All the top four batters added crucial runs, as the opener Phil Salt scored 78 off 36 balls (6 fours and 6 sixes), and his opening partner Virat Kohli scored 50 off 38 balls (5 fours and 1 six). Also, captain Rajat Patidar scored 53 off 20 balls (4 fours and 5 sixes) and the no.4 batter Tim David scored 34 not out off 16 balls (2 fours and 3 sixes).
In reply, MI fought hard to manage the total of 222/5 in 20 overs. They had no strong early partnerships, which hugely affected their chase. Although the impact player Sherfane Rutherford fought hard in the end by smashing 71 not out off 31 balls with one four and nine sixes, it was too late for the hosts.
Virat Kohli set new T20 record
During the first innings, RCB openers Phil Salt and Virat Kohli had a 120-run partnership.
It was the 47th century partnership for Virat Kohli in his T20 career. With this century partnership, Kohli surpassed Caribbean legend Chris Gayle (46 times) and Pakistan star Babar Azam (46 times) to set a new record for most century partnerships in T20 career.
First 3 RCB batters scored 50 or more runs
In the RCB innings, the first three batters scored 50+ runs. After openers Phil Salt (78) and Virat Kohli (50), the captain Rajat Patidar (53) also scored a crucial half-century.
It is the sixth time that all the top three batters scored 50 or more runs in the same innings of an IPL match. RCB became the first team to record it more than once, while they achieved it for the first time during their match against Lucknow Super Giants in Bengaluru in 2023.
