Yahoo Sports has confirmed that Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly set to leave Marseille after submitting his resignation, following the club’s failure to reach the Champions League last 16. Despite having a contract at the Stade Vélodrome running until 2027, the deal could now be ended more than a year early. Marseille are currently third in Ligue 1, with De Zerbi leading his side to 12 victories so far this season.
Champions League exit, training absence, and sack reports all add up to a disastrous situation for Roberto De Zerbi
Roberto De Zerbi, formerly of Shakhtar Donetsk and Brighton & Hove Albion, took charge of Marseille in 2024 and initially made a strong impact. He strengthened a talented squad with additions such as former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood and guided Marseille into Europe in his debut season, raising expectations for the future.
However, the 2025–26 campaign has been marked by inconsistency, with a heavy 3–0 Champions League defeat to Club Brugge proving decisive. That loss left Marseille 25th in the league table, outside the top 24 required to reach the knockout stages, effectively ending their European run. A report from Tribal Football suggested club officials were considering drastic action and sacking him.
De Zerbi then missed a training session at Clairefontaine ahead of a league game against Paris FC, fuelling speculation about his future. According to latest reports, the Italian coach has now offered to step down, with talks held between all parties and an official decision expected soon.
Our opinion of De Zerbi potentially resigning Marseille
Roberto De Zerbi has been one of the most polarizing managers of the past few years. Some consider him to be an absolute genius, with even Pep Guardiola once praising him glowingly. Others, though, reached him to be an overrated manager. Whether he ends up staying or quitting Marseille, our prediction is that he'll return to the Premier League this summer.
Manchester United have been looking at De Zerbi for a very long time, in fact, it was reported that the Italian only failed to join Man Utd due to financial disagreements between the manager and club. Fabrizio Romano had recently confirmed that United previously held talks with De Zerbi and Tuchel. Now with the club looking for a new manager in the summer, it is almost guaranteed that United will have another round of talks with De Zerbi if he resigns from Marseille and becomes available. Let us wait and see if De Zerbi eventually does end up managing the Red Devils.
