IPL Team Owners List 2026

The Indian Premier League has grown into one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world since its inception in 2008. What started as a cricket tournament is now a multi-billion-dollar ecosystem, backed by some of the most powerful business tycoons, global investors, and celebrities.

Over the years, franchise ownership has played a crucial role in shaping team success—both on and off the field. Strong leadership, financial backing, and strategic vision have helped teams build global brands beyond just cricket.

Recently, the league has witnessed major ownership developments, with franchises like Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals undergoing significant changes. These high-value deals highlight the ever-growing valuation and global appeal of the IPL.

In this article, we take a detailed look at the IPL team owners list, breaking down who owns each of the 10 franchises and how their ownership structures are shaping the future of the league.

1: Mumbai Indians Owner

The Mumbai Indians remain one of the most stable franchises in the league in terms of ownership, backed by corporate strength and consistent leadership.

Ownership Structure

The team is owned by Reliance Industries (RIL) through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Indiawin Sports Private Limited.

Key Figures Behind Mumbai Indians

  • Principal Owner: Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, is the driving force behind the franchise’s financial backing and long-term vision.

  • Face of the Franchise: Nita Ambani has been the heart of Mumbai Indians since day one. Actively involved in team operations and culture, she plays a key role in building the iconic “MI Family” identity.

  • Next-Gen Leadership: Akash Ambani has emerged as a central figure in recent years, leading auction strategies and playing a major role in the franchise’s global expansion plans.

With strong leadership across generations, Mumbai Indians continue to set the benchmark for stability and success in the IPL ecosystem.

2: Royal Challengers Bengaluru Owner

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru witnessed a landmark ownership shift in March 2026, mirroring the recent transformation seen across the league.

Current Ownership (2026)

A four-party consortium has acquired 100% ownership of the franchise—including both the IPL and WPL teams—for a record-breaking $1.78 billion (₹16,700 crore), making it the most valuable deal in IPL history.

The new ownership structure includes:

  • Aditya Birla Group: Led by Kumar Mangalam Birla, with Aryaman Vikram Birla appointed as Chairman of RCB.

  • Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. (BCCL): Represented by Satyan Gajwani, who takes on the role of Vice-Chairman.

  • Blackstone Inc.: Investing via its BXPE (Blackstone Private Equity Strategies) platform.

  • Bolt Ventures: Backed by David Blitzer, known for stakes in the Philadelphia 76ers and Crystal Palace.

Previous Ownership (2008–2025)

For most of its history, RCB operated under the UB Group and later Diageo:

  • United Spirits Limited: Held full ownership through Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd. before deciding to sell in late 2025 to refocus on its core beverage business.

  • Vijay Mallya: The original owner who bought the franchise in 2008 for $111.6 million. Though he lost control in 2016 due to legal and financial troubles, he remains closely linked to RCB’s early identity and branding.

This transition marks a new era for RCB, with a diversified ownership group poised to reshape the franchise’s commercial and sporting future.

3: Chennai Super Kings Owner

The team is owned and operated by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited. While publicly listed, control firmly rests with the promoter group led by the Srinivasan family.

Key Stakeholders

  • N. Srinivasan (Chairman): Returned to the top role in late 2025 and continues to be the chief architect behind CSK’s long-term success.

  • Rupa Gurunath (Director): Plays a key role in day-to-day operations and strategic decisions for the franchise.

  • Promoter Group – EWS Finance & Investments: Holds a dominant ~47.2% stake, maintaining controlling interest.

  • India Cements Shareholders’ Trust: Owns roughly 30% of the company.

  • Public & Institutional Investors: Around 16–18% is held by public shareholders, including Life Insurance Corporation of India with ~6%.

Evolution of CSK’s Ownership

  • 2008–2014: Owned directly by India Cements, with Srinivasan serving as Managing Director while also holding a key role in the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

  • 2015: To address conflict-of-interest concerns, the franchise was demerged into CSKCL, with India Cements shareholders receiving stakes in the new entity.

  • 2022: CSK became India’s first “sports unicorn,” crossing a $1 billion valuation in the unlisted market.

  • 2025–2026: Even after India Cements sold its cement business to UltraTech Cement, the Srinivasan family retained full control of CSK—cementing its status as their prized sporting asset.

4: Sunrisers Hyderabad Owner

Sunrisers Hyderabad took over from the Deccan Chargers in 2012 and now they are owned by the SUN TV Network Limited. Kalanithi Maran and his daughter Kavya Maran run the show. SRH have won one IPL title so far, winning it in 2016.

5: Delhi Capitals Owner

The Delhi Capitals operate under a unique 50-50 joint venture, making it one of the few IPL teams with equal ownership between two major Indian conglomerates. As of March 2026, the franchise is owned and managed by JSW GMR Cricket Pvt. Ltd.

The Ownership Duo

  • GMR Group: Led by Kiran Kumar Grandhi (Co-Chairman), GMR are the original owners, having founded the team in 2008 as the Delhi Daredevils.

  • JSW Sports: Headed by Parth Jindal (Co-Chairman), JSW acquired a 50% stake in 2018, ushering in a new era and rebranding the franchise as Delhi Capitals.

6: Punjab Kings Owner

The Punjab Kings boasts one of the most recognizable ownership groups in the IPL, blending Bollywood star power with strong corporate backing.

The franchise continues to operate under KPH Dream Cricket Private Limited, a consortium of four key stakeholders.

Ownership Breakdown

  • Mohit Burman (46–48%): Chairman of Dabur India and the largest stakeholder, often seen as the driving force behind the franchise.

  • Preity Zinta (23%): The vibrant face of PBKS, widely known for her passionate presence at matches and strong fan connect.

  • Ness Wadia (23%): Managing Director of Bombay Dyeing and a key member of the Wadia Group.

  • Karan Paul (6–8%): Chairman of Apeejay Surrendra Group, adding further corporate strength to the ownership mix.

The team has reached the IPL finals only twice, in 2014 and 2025.

7: Kolkata Knight Riders Owner

The Kolkata Knight Riders is owned by Knight Riders Sports Private Limited, historically a joint venture between Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and the Mehta Group.

The long-standing 55/45 ownership split has undergone a major transformation heading into 2026:

  • Shah Rukh Khan (Red Chillies Entertainment): Reportedly increasing his stake from 55% to nearly 90% through a deal valued at around ₹4,000 crore ($480 million), solidifying his near-total control of the franchise.

  • The Mehta Group: Led by Jay Mehta, the group is reducing its stake by offloading approximately 35%, while retaining a small minority share (around 5–10%) to continue its association with the team.

  • Juhi Chawla: A long-time co-owner and public face alongside SRK, she remains closely involved with the franchise and is often seen supporting the team at matches.

This shift marks a new era for KKR, with Shah Rukh Khan taking near-complete ownership while maintaining the legacy connection with the Mehta family. KKR have won the title thrice in 2012, 2014, and 2015.

8: Rajasthan Royals Owner

The Rajasthan Royals, champions of the inaugural Indian Premier League 2008, have undergone a landmark ownership change in March 2026.

A consortium led by Kal Somani, along with existing minority investors including Rob Walton and The Hamp Family, has acquired 100% ownership of the franchise in a deal valued at $1.63 billion (approximately ₹13,600 crore). While the acquisition has been finalized, the complete management transition will take place after the conclusion of the 2026 IPL season.

Prior to this takeover, the franchise was owned by Media IPL Ltd, led by Manoj Badale. The Royals had previously faced a two-year suspension in 2015, alongside Chennai Super Kings, before making their return to the league in 2018.

Back in 2008, the team also had high-profile co-owners in Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty, who later handed over operational control to Manoj Badale and his group.

This latest ownership shift marks a significant new chapter in the Rajasthan Royals’ journey, potentially reshaping the franchise’s future both on and off the field.

9: Gujarat Titans Owner

The Gujarat Titans entered the IPL in 2022 and won the IPL in their very first year. They are backed by CVC Capital, and in 2025, the Torrent Group became the majority owner of the franchise after acquiring a 67% stake, while CVC Capital owns 33%.

10: Lucknow Super Giants Owner

Lucknow Super Giants are owned by Sanjiv Goenka’s RPSG Group, the same people who owned the Rising Pune Super Giants in 2016 and 2017. They reached the Playoffs in their inaugural season but since then, they have struggled to make it to the semis.
