The competition in tennis is reaching a new high in the 2019 season. There is unprecedented uniformity with the two bodies of tennis that is the ATP and WTA.
There have been 19 ATP tournaments played so far with the ongoing Miami Masters and there have been 19 different champions in these ATP tournaments. WTA is always considered to be unpredictable but tennis has seen something rare that is “no repeat champions” till now after 13 WTA tournaments played in the first three months. No tennis season in the Open era has started in this fashion for the men's side, women's side or both.
The depth and battles have made 2019 one of the most thrilling and intoxicating starts to the season till date. The 'big three’ have been dominating the tour for a long time. But the 2019 season has seen some fearless new faces like Bianca Andreescu with some buoyant old players like Roger Federer.
The surprise started to hit in the early weeks of the season itself. Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka won their second continuous major at the Australian Open but both the world no. 1 lost their first tournament in 2019. The pattern of upsets and shock losses have been continued so far.
With the falling of the top seeds, there is still no player dominating the tour. The young guns are giving tough times to the WTA legends while the 'big three’ are unable to command the tournaments which is unusual in the ATP events.
The 19th ATP tournament that is the Indian Wells would have broken the record of the stream of different winners for different events when the Swiss maestro Roger Federer reached the finals. But again, the event in Florida saw a new champion as Dominic Thiem came out strong for Federer in the finals. With this, the tour saw 19 different winners start 2019.
