WWE SmackDown was very newsworthy and not only for the reason that Cody Rhodes won the WWE Championship. The WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship and the WWE Tag Team Championship has new number 1 Contenders. These signal a new direction for the tag team division for the men and the women. There were two tag team matches that took place to determine these contenders. The Road to WrestleMania 42 is taking shape and the tag team division will be an important part of the 2 nights.
Let’s talk about the new number 1 Contenders to the tag team championships in WWE
Tag Team Wrestling in WWE is on the rise again
The new Women’s Tag Team Champions Nia Jax and Lash Legend were celebrating tonight and then they were interrupted by Charlexa and Giulia and Kiana James. Both teams made the case that they should be the next team to get a shot at the tag team titles. GM Nick Aldis came out and he made the match. It would be Charlexa against Giulia and Kiana James. The winner would get a future Women’s Tag Team Championship Match. This was a good match and the tension that was brewing between Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss since the past month was not there. They were operating like a well oiled machine. And the heel team opposite them was also a very good tag team. The Women’s United States Champion Giulia was at her vicious best. Kiana James has been continuing her rise in the women’s division. At the End of the match Charlexa won and they are once again the new number 1 Contenders for the Women’s Tag Team Championship.
The WWE Tag Team Championship was also in focus finally after it seemed like WWE forgot about it. The match featured a new tag team and it was Damian Priest and R Truth that were teaming together. These two men have previous history with The Judgement Day and therefore the fans liked their reunion. The fans loved their banter back in the day. These two men looked right at home and they were having fun. R Truth gave the tribute to his hero John Cena doing the 5 Moves of Doom. Damian Priest is finally getting something new to do and he gets to have fun with one of his dear friends. These two men will receive a tag team title opportunity and most probably they will win that match because the tag team division on SmackDown needs a reset.
These two results happening in one night and this close to WrestleMania 42 is a good sign for the overall tag team division of WWE which includes both men and women. Charlexa being at the Top of the women’s tag team division as the number 1 Contenders means familiarity and with Lash Legend as the champion, it will allow her to learn from the best in the business. This will be a short term feud but it will be impactful and could result in a heel turn for either Charlotte Flair or Alexa Bliss. On the Men’s side a fresh direction is being taken in the WWE Tag Team Championship. The old ways had resulted in nothing but staleness and that is not a good sign for talent. Having two popular WWE superstars such as Damian Priest and R Truth being the face of the division will bring new eyeballs. The Tag Team division needs to be properly represented at WrestleMania 42.
